Behind the Board: Cobe Matthews

Cobe Matthews, the current Semi Pro World Champion, shares his journey, experiences, and love for the sport. From his early days inspired by his dad to his current aspirations, Cobe offers insights into the world of wakesurfing.

1. What got you started in wakesurfing?

I started wakesurfing because I saw my dad doing it with his friends. They were having so much fun and it looked like they weren't getting hurt, so I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did!

2. What is your favorite thing about wakesurfing?

My favorite thing about wakesurfing is the community. The people in this sport are so supportive and fun to be around. I also love the feeling of freedom that I get when I'm out on the water. I can just let go and be myself.

3. What board are you surfing and why?

I'm currently surfing the Pure Wakesurf Zero G. I love this board because it's so stable and easy to ride. It also has a lot of speed, which is great for getting air time.

4. Who are your biggest influences in the sport?

My biggest influences in the sport are Jake Breedlove, the Flegel brothers, and my younger brother Dylan Matthews. These guys are all amazing riders and they inspire me to be the best that I can be.

5. What are your biggest strengths/weaknesses as a wakesurfer?

My biggest strengths are probably my air time and my ability to hype up my friends. I love watching other people ride and I always try to be as supportive as I can. My biggest weakness is probably my perfectionism. I always want to be doing everything perfectly and I can get frustrated with myself if I make a mistake.

6. What is your favorite trick?

My favorite trick is the 3 shuv. It's a super stylish trick and it's always a crowd-pleaser.

7. What is your training regimen like? Do you surf all year or seasonal?

My training regimen changes throughout the year. In the winter, I'm typically just trying to keep the rust off and learn new tricks. The water is so calm in the winter in Washington that it's perfect for practicing new stuff. During competition season, I will typically try and just do my contest run every time I ride till I've landed each pass at least 2 or 3 times each, then I'll work on stuff that I may want to add to the run if it's something hard that I've landed but isn't consistent yet.

8. If you could surf anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’d probably choose to surf in Lake Powell just because I haven’t been there yet and I grew up watching wakeboarding movies filmed there and so it’d be pretty surreal to live out a “childhood dream” of mine to finally get to ride out there.

9. Who do you surf with?

I typically surf with my family or with my friend Julie Prochnow. We have a lot of fun out on the water together and we always push each other to be better.

10. What advice would you give to someone just starting out in wakesurfing?

The best advice I can give to someone just starting out in wakesurfing is to be patient and have fun. It takes a lot of time and practice to get good at this sport, so don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away. Just keep riding and you'll eventually start to improve.

11. What is your favorite wakesurfing memory?

Probably all the times I’ve gotten to ride with my family in Crescent Bar growing up, there’s so many that it’s hard to pick one haha.

12. What would your wakesurfing superhero name be?

I'm not sure what my wakesurfing superhero name would be. Maybe something like  "The Air King."

13. If you could have any celebrity join you for a wakesurf session, who would it be and why?

I would love to go wakesurfing with Shane Gillis. He's a super funny guy and I think he would be a lot of fun to hang out with.

14. What does being part of the Pure Wakesurf team mean to you?

Being part of Pure Wakesurf means being apart of more than just a brand’s team, it means being part of a loving and caring family. Everyone on this team has each other’s back and we all push each other to be the best wakesurfers we can be, and everyone is all such great people! It’s really hard to have a bad time when you’re hanging with the Pure team!

Zero G 2025

$42,367.00

ZERO G: The Ultimate Speed Machine

Through rigorous testing, it became abundantly clear that the Zero G is incredibly fast and knows no limits. It's undoubtedly the fastest board you'll ever ride.

The Zero G features a diamond nose for quick spins and smooth reverts, an exaggerated diamond tail for symmetry and speed, and X-FLEX technology for enhanced response and control. The sharper rails improve speed, rail-to-rail control, and spin release, while the concave deck enhances control and allows for a beefy hold. The single to double concave hull provides lift, speed, and stability in choppy waters.

This board took home 1st at Worlds with @cobster02, and has seen many other podium finishes with @wake_n_lake_lanier and others. If you're looking for a board that's incredibly fast and playful, the ZERO G is the one for you.
