How’d it all begin?
Wakesurfing wasn’t love at first sight for me. My wake boat was for wakeboarding and charters, but wakesurfing stole my heart from the first try. Now, I’m all about spreading the stoke and pushing my riding to the limit!
What keeps you hooked?
It’s the amazing community, the thrill of progression (and frustration!), and the joy of coaching others. Seeing their excitement from landing a trick is almost as good as landing it myself!
Board of choice?
The 4'7" Carbon FX Zero G. I’ve ridden them all, but this board’s speed and responsiveness keep me coming back. It took some getting used to, but trust me, there’s a perfect Pure Wakesurf board for everyone!
Who inspires you?
Evan Feierabend and Cobe Matthews (yes, another Cobe!) for their passion and positivity. Todd Chapdelaine and Keith Pohl for their age-defying coaching and technical tips. Noah Flegel for his epic hair game (he even inspired me to ditch the clippers!), and Kennon Owensby for his leadership and ambassador spirit. (Goals!)
Strengths & weaknesses?
My strengths are drive, determination, and the relentless pursuit of improvement—as a rider and coach. My weaknesses? Being my own worst critic (gotta loosen up!) and, well, these old knees!
Favorite trick?
The one I haven’t landed yet! But I’m currently obsessed with the 360 and all its variations.
Training regimen?
Three sessions a week with an hour in the water each. Yoga and balance board training keep my core strong and flexible. My season runs year-round, even through the chilly winter months!
Dream wakesurf spot?
Any glassy, calm body of water! Bonus points for tropical vibes and maybe a dolphin sharing the wave.
Who’s in your crew?
My wife, Christi, is the best boat driver ever! I also shred with Erik Barron, Kurt Ehlers, Sam Burrafato, Kristian Bjerke, and the awesome Surf ATL crew.
Advice for newbies?
Go at your own pace, don’t get discouraged, and learn from those who are better than you.
Best wakesurfing memory?
Tough call, but winning Nationals at Callaway Gardens tops the list. Especially considering the “too old” comments I heard when I was starting out. That win was extra sweet!
Wakesurfing superhero name?
Papa Surf!
Celebrity shred partner?
Taylor Calmus, because of his energy and down-to-earth vibe. And, being a Bills fan, Josh Allen would be epic!
What’s it like being part of Pure Wakesurf?
It’s everything! From ambassadorship to team rider, it’s a dream come true with the best brand in the game. The Pure family feel, with Kennon and Vanessa leading the way, is what makes it truly special!
